SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – Drake University senior point guard Richard Carter (Detroit, Mich.) has been named an honorable mention selection to the Missouri Valley Conference men's basketball all-conference team, the league announced Tuesday.
Carter has led the Bulldogs this season and ranks fourth in the MVC in scoring at 16.3 points per game and has scored 20 or more points in a game nine times this season. His 3.7 assists per game also rank seventh in the league and his 1.8 steals per contest are the fourth highest average in the conference.
This season he has scored 488 points, the 20th most in a single season by a Bulldog and he is on pace to become just the 18th Drake men's basketball player to record 500 or more points in a season. The honor is the first MVC postseason honor for Carter in his two-year career at Drake.
Carter was one of a series of MVC student-athletes honored Tuesday with all-MVC honors. Regular-season league champion Wichita State dominated the awards with five Shockers earning all-MVC honors and Fred VanVleet being named the Larry Bird MVC Player of the Year.
The Valley's postseason awards continue on Wednesday with the unveiling of the all-bench and most-improved teams.
The Bulldogs tipoff of the MVC Tournament on Thursday evening when the eight-seeded Bulldogs face No. 9 Evansville at 6:05 p.m. in St. Louis' Scottrade Center. The game will be televised regionally on MVC TV affiliates.
