JONESBORO, Ark. - The Drake men's golf team registered a 36-hole total of 622 (313-309) to find itself tied for 15th place after two rounds of the Arkansas State Red Wolf Intercollegiate on Monday (April 7).
“The conditions were tough today, especially during the morning round when temperatures were in the low 40's with rain and strong winds,” Drake head coach Matt Lewis commented. “It was difficult for the guys to manage their games in the conditions as they were trying to stay dry and warm on a wet course, so that was a tough challenge.”
Redshirt junior Devin Leland (Huxley, Iowa) led the Bulldogs' efforts with rounds of 74 and 79 for a 153 total, good for a 38th-place tie.
“Devin (Leland) got off to an awesome start and led for the majority of the opening round before a couple of tough holes coming in,” said Lewis. “As a team, we had too many big numbers each round and that really hurt us. Tomorrow we just need to eliminate big numbers as the weather will be much of the same, so hopefully we can do so and have a good final round tomorrow.”
Senior Connor Steele (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) posted a 36-hole total of 157 (79-76) and will enter the final round tied for 54th place.
Sophomore Will McDonald (Tulsa, Okla.) and junior Dane Worley (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) are two and three shots, respectively, behind Steele. McDonald registered a 157 (78-79) scorecard, while Worley carded a 158 (82-76) total.
Senior Matt Ohl (Milford, Iowa) rounded out Drake's efforts with a 161 (83-78) cumulative score through two rounds.
The Bulldogs close out their stay at the ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate on Tuesday (April 8) with the tournament's final 18 holes. A shotgun start begins play at 8:00 a.m.
