Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa – The University of North Dakota volleyball team swept Drake University, 3-0, on Tuesday night at the Knapp Center. North Dakota won by scores of 26-24, 25-17 and 25-12 to improve its overall record to 2-2 on the season, while Drake dropped its first match of the year to fall to 3-1 overall.
Freshman Kyla Inderski (Urbandale, Iowa), who earlier in the day was named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week after a stellar debut this past weekend, connected for 11 kills along with eight digs. Sophomore Nicole Woods (St. Charles, Ill.) also finished with 11 kills and eight digs.
Drake grabbed a 7-2 lead in the first set after a kill by Inderski. However, North Dakota later rallied to even the score at 11-11 after a block assist by Julia Kaczorowska and Faith Dooley. The two teams traded points before North Dakota took an 18-16 lead after a kill by Nikki Husfeldt. Drake quickly called a timeout, and out of the break the Bulldogs trimmed the margin to 22-21 after a kill by sophomore Capris Quaites (Omaha, Neb.).
North Dakota answered with two straight points, as Drake used its final timeout. After the timeout, the Bulldogs scored two straight points of their own to even the score at 23-23, but after the teams swapped points it was two costly Drake errors that gave the opening set to North Dakota, 26-24. Drake sophomore Chandelle Davidson (Gretna, Neb.) had a service error, while senior Amanda Platte (Mount Vernon, Iowa) followed with an attack error.
Set two was tight early as the score was 16-16 after a kill by Platte. However, North Dakota ripped off nine of the next 10 points to take the second set, 25-17.
Drake, who played five sets in each of its three matches this past weekend at the Omaha Classic, seemed to run out of gas in the final set. North Dakota controlled the frame as it cruised to a 25-12 victory to win the match.
Drake travels to the Akron Invitational for four matches from Sept. 5-6 as the Bulldogs will play Austin Peay, Bryant, Akron and Binghamton in Akron, Ohio.
