DES MOINES, Iowa - A golden goal in the second overtime session from Jorge Alvarez spoiled the upset bid for the Drake men's soccer team as the Bulldogs (1-2-1) suffered a 1-0 setback to 24th-rated UIC (Illinois at Chicago) on Monday (Sept. 8) at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
Redshirt sophomore Ben LeMay (Hugo, Minn./Saint Thomas Academy) nearly ended the game at the 104:19 mark in the Bulldogs' favor as his header was thwarted by a save from UIC goalkeeper Andrew Putna.
Junior Alex Troester (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West) had his attempt at a game-winning goal in the 93rd minute (92:29) saved as well by Putna. Both of the Flames' shot attempts in the initial overtime period were blocked.
Freshman Steven Enna (Overland Park, Kan./St. James Academy) came close to netting the game-winning tally in the second half as he placed his shot at the 82:39 mark on frame, but Putna recorded the save.
The Flames (3-0-1) outshot Drake in the affair, 17-9, but managed only a 4-3 advantage on net thanks to the golden goal by Alvarez.
UIC managed a 5-2 margin in shots in the first half, including 2-0 on goal. Sophomore James Wypych (Wellington, New Zealand) nearly scored for the Bulldogs in the 19th minute (18:10) as his attempt slid wide left.
A team-high three-shot performance from Wypych paced Drake, while Alvarez recorded a game-high six shots for the Flames.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Darrin MacLeod (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) made three saves for the Bulldogs, while Putna pulled in three stops for UIC, including two in overtime.
Drake returns to action on Saturday (Sept. 13) with a 7:00 p.m. tilt at Marquette.
