Drake Men Shut Oral Roberts Out in 1-0 Victory

Freshman Fearing scores first career goal as the difference maker

DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake University men's soccer improved its unblemished record to start the 2025 season with a Saturday night win over Oral Roberts. The Bulldogs inched ahead of ORU in a physical contest at Mediacom Stadium, earning a 1-0 non-conference victory.

The Bulldogs (5-0-3) outshot Oral Roberts 5-0 in the opening half but, despite the offensive advantage, could not put a tally on the scoreboard. The two teams went into the halftime break knotted in a scoreless tie.

Oral Roberts (1-6-1) was able to retaliate some in the second half, outshooting Drake 5-4 over the final 45 minutes, but Drake made their move early in the period. In the 50th minute, Drake set up for a corner kick which caromed between a few players before freshman Elijah Fearing found it. Fearing delivered a strike with his right foot that found the back of the net, putting Drake on top 1-0.

The physicality ramped up from there as the Golden Eagles started to press for the equalizer and Drake looked to add some insurance. Neither squad could connect again as nine total cards were allocated, but the Bulldog defense did enough to ensure Drake's 1-0 win.

"Hard-fought win tonight for the boys," said Pat Flinn, Drake head coach. "Proud of their effort and fight. It would have been nice to capitalize on a transition moment when we were up 1-0 so the last 15 minutes were a bit more comfortable, but a gritty, tough shutout sometimes feels even better. Onto the next one, which is big now that we're entering league play. Next man up…go Dogs."

Fearing's goal was his first of the season and the first of his collegiate career. Cole Schrage, Damian Segura, and Barrett Kitts all attempted two shots apiece. In goal, Tomas Butkovic made one save while picking up the shutout dub.

Drake will be back home next weekend for the start of Missouri Valley Conference play. The Bulldogs are set to host Northern Illinois at 7 p.m. on Sep. 27.
