ST. LOUIS – Freshman Becca Jonas (Independence, Mo.) of the Drake University women's basketball team was selected the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Monday, Jan. 12.
Jonas continues to provide Drake with a strong inside presence in her first season. She averaged 15.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 1.5 steals in Drake's wins over Illinois State and SIU this past weekend as the Bulldogs improved to 4-0 in the MVC, their best start to conference play since the 2007-08 season.
On the season, Jonas averages a team-high 7.6 rebounds per game along with scoring 12.3 points per game, which ranks second on the team and 10th in the league.
This is the fourth newcomer of week winner this season for the Bulldogs. Jonas previously won the award on Dec. 1 and 22 while Maddy Dean (Jordan, Minn.) earned the award on Jan. 5.
Drake travels to in-state rival UNI this Friday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast online on ESPN3.com.
