Three Bulldogs Record Double-Doubles In 3-1 Win At Bradley

Box Score

PEORIA, Ill. - Three Bulldogs recorded double-doubles as the Drake University volleyball team earned a 3-1 Missouri Valley Conference victory at Bradley, Tuesday evening.

The Bulldogs (13-12, 4-4 MVC) were led by 15 kills and 11 digs from freshman Grace Schofield (Mundelein, Ill.) and 14 kills plus 14 digs by sophomore Kyla Inderski (Urbandale, Iowa). Junior setter Chandelle Davidson (Gretna, Neb.) also notched a double-double with 20 assists and 11 digs. Defensively, Michelle Thommi (Omaha, Neb.) had 22 digs to  guide the Bulldogs to their third MVC road win this season.

"I'm really proud of out team tonight and this was a match we needed to win,” said Drake head coach Darrin McBroom. "We made too many errors in the third set and that cost us, but we came back strong in the fourth set. It's nice to have four wins in the first half of the conference season and hopefully we can build off of that total.”

Drake took the match by set scores of 25-17, 25-23, 22-25 and 25-16 behind a .215 hitting percentage while forcing 27 Bradley (5-14, 0-7 MVC) errors. Erica Haslag led the Braves with 15 kills on 44 attempts.

Drake opened up swinging, hitting .353 in the opening set, and scored six of the first seven points of the match behind Inderski's serving. A 7-2 run later extended that lead to allow the Bulldogs to cruise to the 25-17 win in the set.

The Bulldogs trailed, 14-10, in the second set and later trailed 22-18 before closing the set on a 7-1 run to prevail, 25-23. Inderski's serving was again key to run with along with a kill from her and Schofield and a block from Katie Dulek (Lenexa, Kan.) and Scarlett Howerter (Lincoln, Neb.).

“Scarlett [Howerter] did a great job playing in place of Makena Schoene and led our team in efficiency by hitting .333,” McBroom said of Howerter, who finished with eight kills and three blocks.

The third set was just as tight throughout with neither team building a significant lead until two-straight kills from the Braves put the match away, 25-22.

Drake wasted little time in reasserting control of the match in the fourth set by rolling out to a 12-3 lead as Davidson served up a 10-0 run. The Bulldogs' lead remained at 10 or more points for much of the remainder of the match to prevail 25-16 in the set to take the match.

“Good serving from Chandelle [Davidson] really got us off to a great start,” McBroom added.

The Bulldogs return to action as they continue their four-game road trip on Saturday, Oct. 17 at UNI. First serve against the Panthers is set for 7 p.m.
