The Drake University football team heads west to take on the San Diego Toreros on Saturday at 4 p.m. CST.
Drake and San Diego are tied for second in the PFL standings with Morehead State with a 2-1 record. The Dayton Flyers are on top of the standings at 2-0. Last week, the Bulldogs routed visiting Valparaiso 34-7, while the Toreros fell at Dayton, 13-12.
The all-time series between Drake and USD is even at 11 apiece. The Teroros have won the last two meetings and seven of the last 10.
Drake's defense continues to lead the squad as the team ranks first in PFL games in total defense by allowing just 228 yards per game. The Bulldogs also lead the conference in rushing (51.7 ypg), passing (177.0 ypg), and third-down conversion, holding opponents to 26.7 percent (12-of-45). John Hugunin leads Drake's defense with 49 tackles, including 7.0 for a loss. The fifth-year senior linebacker has also recorded a nation leading six forced fumbles and has also registered two fumble recoveries and three quarterback hurries. In last week's win over Valpo, Hugunin recorded his first career interception. Junior defensive end Mack Marrin leads the conference with five sacks and ranks second in tackles for a loss with 7.0. He has also registered a team-best four quarterback hurries.
Drake's offense is led by junior running back Conley Wilkins, who has scored 48 of Drake's 151 points this season and rushed for 416 yards, the fourth-most in PFL.
San Diego has the top rushing defense in the PFL, as the Toreros are only allowing 85.6 yards per game. USD's defense is led by defensive end Jonathan Petersen, who leads the PFL with 7.5 tackles for a loss, and cornerback Jamal Agnew, who leads the league with nine passes defended.
