SAN DIEGO, Calif. – No. 30 San Diego topped 33rd-ranked Drake University men's tennis team, 4-2, in the championship match of the Hilton San Diego Mission Spring Classic on Saturday (March 21) at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center.
The Toreros made quick work of the Bulldogs to take the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 3 and a 6-3 victory at No. 1.
Senior Ben Mullis (Leicestershire, England) dominated USD's Ciaran Fitzgerald, winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 to tie the match up at one. The Toreros regained the lead and took a 3-1 advantage with wins from Nos. 1 and 3. Drake's senior Ravi Patel (London, England) managed to cut the Bulldog deficit with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 4, but a straight set win by USD's No 81 Filip Vittek secured the tournament championship with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2.
The Bulldogs return to the Roger Knapp Tennis Center on Friday, March 27 when they host Georgia State at 11 a.m. and UW-Green Bay at 4 p.m.
