LINCOLN, Neb. – Drake men's tennis continued its early-season road swing Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 loss to Nebraska at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center. While the Cornhuskers secured the doubles point and three singles victories to clinch the match, the Bulldogs delivered a strong and competitive showing in singles play, with three matches pushed to three sets and a fourth nearing a deciding set.
Nebraska opened the day by taking the doubles point with a pair of dominant wins. The duo of Leo Linquet and Henry Lamchinniah cruised to a 6-0 victory over Alex Yeager and Arin Menon at No. 2 doubles, followed by Nikolay Sysoev and Jeri Lassila posting a 6-0 win against Max Goldemberg and Francisco Landeras at No. 3.
Despite falling behind 1-0, Drake responded with grit across the singles courts. Nebraska earned its first singles point at No. 3 as Lassila defeated Alan Gonzalez, 6-0, 6-3. Joan Torres Espinosa then extended the Husker lead with a tightly contested 7-6, 6-2 victory over Adan Tarquino at No. 6.
At the top of the lineup, Christian Winstead battled Sysoev in a three-set match, rallying to take the second set before falling in a close 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 decision that clinched the match for Nebraska.
Multiple Bulldog singles matches showcased Drake's depth and competitiveness. Ben Johnson captured the first-set tiebreaker at No. 2 before play was halted with the match in the third set. Samuel Melaga and Nebraska's Henry Lamchinniah split tight first and second sets at No. 4 before the match went unfinished, while Jose Alessandro Hernandez was pushing toward a deciding set at No. 5.
Drake will look to build on the strong singles performances as the Bulldogs continue non-conference action on Friday against Marquette.
