DES MOINES, Iowa – The Missouri Valley Conference regular season title up for grabs on Sunday and No. 32 Wichita State came out top, defeating the Drake University women's tennis team 7-0 on Sunday at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs (20-5, 6-1) and WSU (21-3, 7-0) entered the finale with identical unbeaten records.
Drake's lone victory of the day came at No. 3 doubles from junior Jordan Eggleston (LaQuinta, Calif.) and freshman Tess Herder (Lee's Summit, Mo.). The Shockers won on each of the top two courts to claim the doubles point.
WSU used the momentum from the doubles action to go on and win all six singles matches in straight-sets.
Eggleston was a bright spot for the Bulldogs at No. 5, as she fought back from a three-game whole in the second set to force a tiebreaker but fell in the tiebreaker 7-5.
After Sunday's match, Drake honored its lone senior Nell Boyd (Arlington Heighs, Ill.), who is just on victory away from tying the school singles record with 102 wins, for her incredible career in the Blue and White.
The Bulldogs' 6-1 league record gives them the No. 2 seed in the MVC Championship, which is set to begin on Friday, April 24 in Evansville. Drake will play at 2 p.m. against the No. 7 seed.
