Box Score CHICAGO, Ill. - Facing a 1-0 deficit after the first set, the Drake University volleyball team rallied to win the next three sets to earn a 3-1 road victory at Loyola on Monday evening to snap Loyola's 11-match win streak.
The win, by scores of 19-25, 29-27, 25-21, 25-16, improved the Bulldogs to 2-1 in the Missouri Valley and 11-9 overall.
“I'm really excited about our team and how well we played tonight,” said Drake head coach Darrin McBroom. “In the first set, Loyola came out firing and we struggled to gain traction. But we calmed down in the second set, squeaked out a win and just kept getting better as the night went on. I'm proud of how we played a patient game, stayed calm and excelled under pressure."
The Bulldogs were led by 11 kills each from Makena Schoene (Seattle, Wash.), Kyla Inderski (Urbandale, Iowa) and Grace Schofield (Mundelein, Ill.). Schofield and Inderski also had 10 digs to record double-doubles.
Loyola's (12-3, 1-1 MVC) Morgan Reardon and Sami Hansen each had 12 kills in the loss.
Drake fell behind early, 10-5, to open the match and was never able to trim that margin as the Ramblers took the set, 25-19. The Bulldogs faced an early deficit again in the second set, but a 7-2 run capped by an Inderski ace gave the Bulldogs a 13-11 lead. Drake extended that lead to four, 21-17, but a 5-1 Loyola run knotted the set at 22-22. Neither squad was able to build up the two-point lead needed to win until Rebecca Brown's (Bentonville, Ark.) serving dished up two Rambler errors to even the match. Brown also had 15 assists and nine digs on the night.
Following intermission, the third set maintained the same pace as the second with neither team pulling away. However, two kills from Schofield helped the Bulldogs close the set on a 5-1 run to prevail, 25-21. Drake held tight to that momentum to claim the match with a 13-5 run to put away the Ramblers.
The Bulldogs continue MVC action this weekend with contests at Indiana State and Illinois State. The two-game trip begins on Friday evening at Illinois State followed by a Saturday match at Indiana State. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. starts.
