Men’s Soccer Edges Bradley, 1-0

DES MOINES, Iowa – Redshirt senior Ben LeMay (Hugo, Minn.) scored his second goal of the season to lift the Drake University men's soccer team past the Bradley Braves, 1-0, Tuesday, Oct. 11 night in Missouri Valley Conference action at the Cownie Soccer Complex.

Drake snapped a six-match losing streak with the win to improve to 4-8-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the MVC. Bradley dropped to 2-8-3 and 0-3-1 in the MVC with the loss.

LeMay's game-winner came in the 69th minute (69:41). The Braves knocked the ball out of bounds in their box to give the Bulldogs a corner kick. Senior James Wypych (Wellington, New Zealand) sent the corner kick from the far side of the field into the box as redshirt senior James Grunert (Muskego, Wis.) redirected the ball to LeMay, who deflected the ball into the net past Bradley goalie Logan Ketterer. Grunert and Wypych were each credited with an assist off the perfectly executed set piece.

Drake controlled the match with a decisive 14-3 advantage in shots, including nine on goal to just two for the Braves.

The Bulldogs nearly had a goal midway through the first half. Junior Aleksi Tuominen (Helsinki, Finland) fired a shot from deep that glanced off the cross bar to Wypych who blasted a shot that Ketterer blocked. The ball was collected by junior Steven Enna (Overland Park, Kan.) who fired a shot just left of the goal. The flurry of shots came in just 17 seconds.

Senior James Pendrigh (Canterbury, New Zealand) almost scored his own goal later as his shot was blocked by Ketterer late in the half. In second half, Pendrigh nearly scored again as his free kick from just outside of the box hit the crossbar. Enna led the Bulldogs with three shot attempts in the final half. LeMay later added the final shot attempt after his goal.

Drake redshirt senior Darrin MacLeod (Waterloo, Ontario) tallied two saves as he earned his 31st career win to take over sole possession of all-time wins in program history. With the shutout, MacLeod added to his program-leading shutout total with 18 in his stellar career.

Drake and Bradley will play again on Oct. 26 in Peoria, Ill.

Drake travels Saturday night to Springfield, Mo., to face the Missouri State Bears. First kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on The Valley On ESPN3.
