SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Freshman
Scott Misselhorn (Cape Town, South Africa) scored his first career goal for the Drake University men's soccer team in a 1-1 draw at Missouri State, Saturday, in Missouri Valley Conference action.
Missouri State (7-4-2, 3-1-1 MVC) scored the first goal of the match in the 19
th minute as Robbie Osclica found the net off a corner kick from Phil Woods.
Early in the match, the Bears had a penalty kick that Drake goalkeeper
Darrin MacLeod (Waterloo, Ontario) made a huge save on.
"Missouri State's undefeated record at home shows that this is not an easy place to play," said head coach
Gareth Smith. "I am happy with aspects of the performance but feel like we could have got more from the game. Other than a few concentration lapses, we were very good defensively for long periods of the game. Great credit has to go to Darrin for an outstanding save in the penalty kick at a critical moment in the game."
Drake (4-8-1, 1-3-1 MVC) scored the equalizer just minutes before halftime. Redshirt sophomore
Paul Ciszewski (Germantown, Wis.) sent a corner kick into the box that the 6-4 Misselhorn headed into net for his first career goal that evened the game at 1-1.
Missouri State played a man down after Jack Griffin received a red card in the 51
st minute.
The Bulldogs outshot the Bears, 6-2, in the final half of regulation. Two of those shots hit the post with the first coming from freshman
Antonio Sanchez (Coralville, Iowa) in the 69
th minute and the other by senior
James Wypych (Wellington, New Zealand) at the 87:58 mark. Drake had one final shot by junior
Aleksi Tuominen (Helsinki, Finland) that went high at the 89:02 mark.
Missouri State had the only shot attempt in the first overtime, but didn't record any in the final overtime session. Drake bounced back with four attempts in the second overtime with shots by
Steven Enna (Overland Park, Kan.),
Mueng Sunday (Coralville, Iowa),
Ben Troester (Iowa City, Iowa) and
James Pendrigh (Canterbury, New Zealand).
"Offensively we created a number of chances to win the game with great individual efforts by James and Antonio hitting the post," Smith said. "It was great to see Scott score his first goal for the program."
Drake finished with 15 shots, including six on goal to just six and two for Missouri State. MacLeod finished with one save as the Bulldogs garnered their first tie of the season.
"A very good point in the road against a very good team," Smith said. "We need to continue to refine out execution in the final third if we want to turn one point into three points."
Drake has a week off before returning to the pitch when it hosts Evansville Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. at the Cownie Soccer Complex. The match with Aces will follow a Drake women's soccer game versus Missouri State at 2 p.m.
