AMES, Iowa – Senior
Kayla Armstrong (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) scored a golden goal for the Drake University women's soccer team to defeat Iowa State, 1-0, Tuesday night at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
Drake (10-4-2) claimed its first win over Iowa State (8-6-1) since the 2006 season and just the third in the all-time in-state series. The Bulldogs had 22 players in the midweek match as they finished with their 10
th shutout this season. Drake improved to 2-0-1 in matches against Power 5 opponents.
"Iowa State put us under tremendous pressure to start the game," said head coach
Lindsey Horner. "We had a few saves off the line and team saves, and while we were a bit on our heels in the first half we started to put our stamp on the game in the second half."
Armstrong's golden goal occurred in the second overtime (102:30) as the senior midfielder broke away from the Cyclones defense and fired a shot from eight yards away for her fifth goal of the season and the 13
th in her career. Armstrong now ranks ninth all-time in program history in career goals.
The Cyclones outshot the Bulldogs, 23-8, in the game, including a 15-2 advantage in the first half. However, Drake tallied six shots in the second half and the overtime sessions. Sophomore
Alyssa Brand (Skokie, Ill.) led the Bulldogs with three shots, including two on goal while Armstrong finished with two shots, both on goal.
"We had a lot of players play well tonight, but our center backs
Ali (Smith) (Overland Park, Kan.) and
Sarah Grace (Nicholson) (Overland Park, Kan.) were excellent all night and worked for our shutout," Horner said. "We knew we weren't going to get a lot of clear chances tonight to score, but we kept our composure in the overtimes when the game got intense and continued to play to our strengths. We had older players make big plays tonight.
Brooke (Dennis) (Wauconda, Ill.) had a huge save outside of her box, and Kayla with the goal."
Drake's two goalies, Dennis and junior
Haley Morris (Clive, Iowa) each played in the non-conference contest. Morris started in goal in the first half and tallied six saves. Dennis took over after halftime and recorded two saves.
Drake returns to Missouri Valley Conference action Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs welcome Missouri State. First kick is set for 2 p.m. at the Cownie Soccer Complex. Prior to the crucial conference match, the program will host a senior day ceremony for Armstrong,
Gabby Charles (Wausau, Wis.), Dennis,
Alex Freeman (Duluth, Minn.) and Nicholson.
"Our team is in an odd situation having had success in the non-conference going 10-1-1, and earning only shutouts against Power 5 schools, yet we play so well in MVC games but haven't come away with the result," Horner said of her team as they vie for their first league win on Saturday against the Bears. "Of all the teams I have been a part of this group is different. There's something special about these players and how they compete for each other, the bond they have off the field, and their strength as a unit. We are looking forward to Saturday and putting together a solid performance, and for Alex to get back on the sidelines with us."
