The Drake University volleyball team is set to finish out the regular season this weekend with a pair of matches on the road at Indiana State and Illinois State. The Bulldogs open the weekend against Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind. on Friday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. The team then travels to Normal, Ill., to take on Illinois State Saturday at 7 p.m.
Earlier in the season, the Bulldogs swept both opponents, 3-0, in the Knapp Center.
The Bulldogs enter the weekend with a 15-15 overall record to tie with last year's record for the program's most wins since 2010 and most MVC wins since 2010.
The team has been led all season by
Kyla Inderski (Urbandale, Iowa) and
Michelle Thommi (Omaha, Neb.), who have both recently reached career milestones. Inderski recently recorded her 1,000th career kill and 1,000th career dig, while Thommi has recorded more than 1,500 digs.
Kameo Pope (Belle Plaine, Iowa), a junior has added 105 blocks on the season to help the Bulldogs dramatically improve their blocking at the net this season.
Friday's opponent, Indiana State, has an overall record of 10-18 and an MVC record of 4-12 with one of their losses coming to the Bulldogs. Indiana State is led by Kynedi Nalls and Bree Spangler. Nalls has recorded 311 kills this season, followed by Spangler with 243.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs visit the fifth-place team in the conference, Illinois State. The Redbirds are 16-12 this season and 9-7 in Valley matches. Jaelyn Keene and Aly Dawson both average nearly 3.20 kills per set while Dawson also adds 2.62 digs per set.
With the final two matches of the season, the Bulldogs sit firmly in seventh place in the MVC standings, one spot out of the upcoming MVC Tournament. The Bulldogs are set to return nine players next season and recently signed a group of four talented freshmen set to join the roster in 2017.
