DES MOINES, Iowa – Junior
Lizzy Wendell (Blue Springs, Mo.) poured in a game-high 24 points for the Drake University women's basketball team in a 78-45 win against Bradley on Sunday afternoon at the Knapp Center.
Drake (19-8, 12-4 MVC) had four others join Wendell in double figure points led by
Sara Rhine's (Eldon, Mo.) 14 points while
Maddy Dean (Jordan, Minn.),
Caitlin Ingle (Runnells, Iowa) and
Nicole Miller (Walker, Iowa) each scored 11 points in the team's final regular season home game.
Following the conclusion of the afternoon matinee, the Bulldogs honored their lone senior
Emma Donahue (Naperville, Ill.) with a senior day ceremony. Donahue had six rebounds, one steal, one assist and one block in 18 minutes.
"Today was about Emma and us being able to play for her," said Drake head coach
Jennie Baranczyk. "Our team came out and really wanted it for her. Bradley came out with equal energy and played hard. This was for Emma and I love everything about this team and our culture. To send Emma off like this is truly special."
It was a fast paced first quarter against Bradley (8-20, 4-13 MVC) with six lead changes and five ties as Ingle gave the Bulldogs a 16-14 lead with a layup with 37 seconds left.
The Braves took their final lead of the game after Kat Yelle knocked in a three-pointer just 16 seconds into the second period. However, it was all Bulldogs after as they went on to score 25 points in the quarter to take a 41-24 halftime lead. At one point in the quarter, Drake made six straight baskets and 9 of their final 11 shots to seize control of the game leading by as many as 37 points late.
Drake won the rebounding battle with a 46-33 advantage as eight different Bulldogs pulled down at least four rebounds. The Bulldogs dominated in the paint with a 42-16 margin and scored 24 points off 17 Bradley turnovers. Drake shot 46.6 percent from the floor and a stellar 82.6 from the free throw line led by Rhine's career high 8-of-9 performance.
