DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University women's tennis team split its pair of matches on Saturday at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center as the Bulldogs opened the day with a 6-1 loss to Marquette but bounced back to sweep Gustavus Aldophus, 4-0.

After a tough loss to Marquette, the Bulldogs responded with a strong victory over Gustavus. Drake jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. Mariel Ante and Tess Herder cruised past Michaela Schulz and Lizzy Stanczyk with a 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot. Joely Lomas and Maddie Johnson secured the doubles point with a 6-2 victory at No. 2.

The Bulldogs kept on rolling in singles play, as Drake took courts one, two and three with the other three courts going unfinished. Johnson was the first one off the court with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2, while Ante put Drake up 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 1 spot. Sophomore Summer Brills clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Sid Dirks at No. 3.

In Drake's first match of the day, Marquette claimed the doubles point with wins on courts one and three.

The Golden Eagles used the momentum from doubles to go on to win five-straight singles matches in straight sets. Johnson put the Bulldogs on the board with a third set super-tiebreaker victory over Diana Tokar, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) at the No. 3 spot.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, March 12 when they host Northern Illinois and Milwaukee.
