ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Junior
Rachel Wanninger (Johnston, Iowa) and seniors
Gabby Charles (Wausau, Wis.) and
Kayla Armstrong (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) each scored one goal for the Drake University women's soccer team as the Bulldogs blanked Towson, 3-0, Sunday, Sept. 11 afternoon to close the 2016 Navy Invitational.
Drake improved to 6-0-1 with its sixth shutout of the season. Towson fell to 2-5-1 with the neutral site loss. The Bulldogs defeated host, Navy, 2-0, Friday (Sept. 9) evening to open the tournament.
"This was a good trip for us in that we played two teams we have never seen and two different styles and formations," said head coach
Lindsey Horner. "We remain focused on improving prior to MVC play and during these two games we were able to accomplish some pretty specific developmental goals that should help us in the long run."
Wanninger found the net for the second straight match after scoring once against the Midshipmen Friday. Against the Tigers in the 16
th minute (16:03), Armstrong sent Wanninger a cross inside the box that Wanninger finished to near post.
In the second half, Charles scored her second career goal in the 48
th minute (48:19) after she beat two defenders and blasted one just underneath the crossbar.
Armstrong added the final goal late as she bent a corner kick into the net for her third goal of the season. Her goal Sunday was scored in the 84
th minute (84:41). Armstrong finished with three shots, one goal and one assist.
Drake's defense was stellar once again as junior goalkeeper finished with six saves. The Tigers recorded six shots on goal.
"Overall we enjoyed our experience while we were here and will spend the next 48 hours preparing for a quick turnaround for Wednesday's game," Horner said.
Drake has a fast turnaround as the Bulldogs will host Western Illinois Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
