MACOMB, Ill. – The Drake University volleyball team closed the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 3-1 loss to undefeated Weber State on Saturday afternoon.
Weber State took the match by set scores of 24-26, 25-20, 25-23, 25-22.
With the loss, Drake finishes the weekend at the Hampton Inn Leatherneck Classic with a 1-2 record after opening action Friday with a 3-0 win over Southeast Missouri State and a tough, 3-2 loss to Western Illinois.
"It was a tough weekend for Drake volleyball and we certainly hoped to do better," said head coach
Darrin McBroom. "We should have gotten it done last night against WIU and led in nearly every statistical category, but still came away with a loss. Today, Weber State team was a very tough team that plays similar to us and they just played a little bit better as a team that we did."
Drake closes non-conference play with an overall record of 9-5 heading into next week's Missouri Valley Conference opener at Evansville.
Makena Schoene (Seattle, Wash.) led the Bulldogs with 12 kills on 34 attempts while
Kyla Inderski (Urbandale, Iowa) added nine kills and 17 digs. Drake's setter tandem of
Chandelle Davidson (Gretna, Neb.) and
Paige Aspinwall (Dayton, Minn.) had 26 and 20 assists, respectively.
Michelle Thommi (Omaha, Neb.), who had 30 digs on Saturday and 58 on the weekend earned Leatherneck Classic All-Tournament team honors.
The first set was tight throughout and facing set point, Drake responded with back-to-back kills from
Grace Schofield (Mundelein, Ill.) and the set-winning kill from Schoene to win the set, 26-24. The second set was equally close until a brief 4-0 WSU run gave the Wildcats a 22-17 cushion that they used to take a 25-20 win.
Drake held an 18-14 lead in the third set, however WSU rattled off five-straight points to take the lead, 19-14. A kill from Schoene briefly tied the match at 23-23, but two-straight kills from the Wildcats gave them a 25-23 win.
In the fourth set, Drake again held a late lead at 17-16 and again, WSU responded with a big run. This time, it was six straight points to put WSU up, 22-17. From there, WSU was able to take the set, 25-22, and dispatch the Bulldogs, 3-1.
Drake returns to the court to start MVC action on Friday, Sept. 23 with a 7 p.m. match at Evansville followed by a 7 p.m. match at SIU on Sept. 24.
