The Drake University football team is set to open Pioneer Football League action on Saturday as the Bulldogs host Morehead State at 1 p.m. at Drake Stadium in their annual homecoming game.
Drake went 1-2 in non-conference action, while Morehead State also posted a 1-2 record during non-conference play. Drake leads the all-time series, 7-3, over Morehead State and has won four of the last five meetings. The Bulldogs hold a perfect 5-0 record against the Eagles at Drake Stadium. Last year, the Eagles edged the Bulldogs in double-overtime, 38-35, at Jayne Stadium.
Morehead State was picked to finish in fourth in the PFL Preseason Poll and are coming off a 56-6 victory over Lincoln (Pa.). The Eagles are led by the reigning PFL Offensive Player of the Year, Austin Gahafer. Gahafer, was one of the top passers in the country last year and averaged nearly 300 yards passing per game, but is only averaging 211.0 yards per game this season. Last week in the Eagles' win over Lincoln, Gahafer recorded a season-best 258 yards passing with three touchdowns. Defensively, MSU is led by senior linebacker Ryan Bennett, who was named second-team All-PFL last season. Bennett has registered a team-best 21 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for a loss this season.
The Bulldogs have a one-two punch in the backfield with running backs
Conley Wilkins and
Drew Lauer. Wilkins leads the team with 198 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Wilkins has scored at least one touchdown in his last five games, dating back to last season. Lauer is averaging 7.0 yards per carry for a total of 167 yards on 24 touches. Fifth-year senior
Eric Saubert has continued where he left off from last season as one of the top tight ends in the nation. Last year, he caught 55 passes to lead the nation's tight ends and ranked in the top-three among tight ends with 506 yards and nine touchdowns. Saubert has led the team in the first three games of the season totaling 16 receptions for 196 yards and three touchdowns.
