Football Heads To First-Place San Diego On Saturday

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Drake University football team heads to defending Pioneer Football League champion and league leading San Diego Saturday. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. CST.

The Bulldogs and the Toreros are meeting for the 25th time. San Diego holds a slight edge in the all-time series, leading 13-11. The Toreros have had Drake's number lately as San Diego has won the last four meetings. The Bulldogs are coming off a 17-12 win over Davidson last week and improved to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in Pioneer Football League play. San Diego extended its conference winning streak to 18 games with its 48-7 win at Stetson. The 18-game PFL winning streak is the second longest in the FCS. The Toreros also have a 14-game home winning streak and is the second longest streak in the FCS.

The Bulldog defense has proven to be one of the best in the PFL. In conference play, the Bulldogs have only allowed eight touchdowns in five games and lead the PFL in total defense (297.4 ypg.), pass defense (198.6) and sacks (13). Drake ranks second in rushing defense (98.8), pass defense efficiency (100.2) and first downs (81). Senior quarterback Grant Kraemer, who didn't play last week due to an injury he suffered against Marist (Oct. 21), leads the PFL with a passing average of 250 yards per game. He has totaled 1,755 yards passing with 11 touchdowns.

The Toreros have the best offense in the PFL as they are averaging 480 yards per game and 45 points per game during conference action. Junior quarterback Anthony Lawrence paces USD's offense as he is completing over 65 percent (152-of-231) of his pass for 1,948 yards with 21 touchdowns and only one interception. Justin Priest is Lawrence's top target. Priest ranks eighth nationally with eight touchdown catches to go along with his 702 receiving yards. Over the last five games, San Diego has shown it can also succeed on the ground as they have rushed for more than 200 yards each game. Freshman Emilio Martinez leads the team with 682 yards rushing with six touchdowns. Defensively, Jonathan Petersen leads the PFL with nine sacks and has tallied 13 tackles for a loss.
