Women’s Basketball Drops Road Game at Wyoming, 75-61

Drake stays on the road with a neutral contest against George Mason on Friday at 3:30 p.m. CST in Boulder, Colo.

LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Drake University women's basketball dropped a road game at Wyoming, 75-61, on Tuesday night at the Arena-Auditorium in Laramie.

Sophomore Becca Hittner (Urbandale, Iowa) scored a team-high 17 points for the Bulldogs to go along with four rebounds and two steals. Junior Sammie Bachrodt (Wichita, Kan.) and sophomore Brenni Rose (Shawnee, Kan.) were next with 11 points each. Redshirt sophomore Sara Rhine (Eldon, Mo.) added nine points.

Wyoming (4-0) made a season-high 14 three-pointers to help defeat Drake (2-2) as it lost its first of three road games this week. The Cowgirls avenged its loss last season at the Knapp Center in the only previous meeting in the series.

The Bulldogs led by one with 2:31 left in the second quarter but Wyoming connected on back-to-back three-pointers to lead 36-31 at halftime. The first two periods were tightly contested with five ties and six lead changes.

Out of halftime, Hittner snagged a steal that led to a layup by Rhine to pull within three points, but the Cowgirls answered with two straight three-pointers as the Bulldogs called a timeout trailing 42-33. Rose later converted a layup, but it would be over three minutes until the team scored again as Wyoming built a 19-point lead after three quarters. Drake outscored Wyoming, 18-13, in the final quarter but it wasn't enough as the Cowgirls pulled out the victory.

Drake shot 50 percent (24-of-48) from the floor, including 6-of-18 (33.3 percent) from three. However, the Bulldogs went 0-of-8 from beyond the arc in the final two quarters. Drake committed 15 turnovers that led to 18 points for Wyoming.

Drake stays on the road with a neutral contest against George Mason on Friday at 3:30 p.m. CST in Boulder, Colo. It is the opening game of the Rocky Mountain Hoops Classic hosted by the University of Colorado. The Bulldogs will close the tournament on Saturday against host Colorado or Mississippi Valley State.
