TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The No. 25 Drake University women's basketball team never trailed in a 64-45 win over Indiana State on Friday, Feb. 17 night at the Hulman Center in Missouri Valley Conference action. With the road victory, Drake extended its winning streak to 15 and improved to 21-4 overall and 14-0 in the MVC.
Freshman
Brenni Rose (Shawnee, Kan.) led all scorers with 15 points and knocked down a career-high four three-pointers. Joining Rose in double figures was freshman
Becca Hittner (Urbandale, Iowa) and redshirt sophomore
Becca Jonas (Independence, Mo.) who each finished with 10 points. Jonas pulled down a team-high seven rebounds while Hittner tallied a career-high three blocks.
Senior
Lizzy Wendell (Blue Springs, Mo.) scored five points as one of the most impressive scoring streaks of all-time came to an end in the win. Wendell had her amazing streak of 10 or more points in a game come to an end at 102 games, a streak dating back to her freshman season. Her streak was the longest active streak in college basketball, ahead of Washington standout Kelsey Plum, who has hit the mark in 76-straight games. Wendell's scoring streak is the fourth longest all-time. Janel Lavender (2007-11) of Ohio State has the all-time record of 136 consecutive games.
Drake started the contest on a 10-0 run that included five points by Hittner, a three by Rose and a bucket by Wendell. The Bulldogs finished the first quarter with an 18-10 lead. Drake stretched its lead to 32-22 at halftime after a buzzer-beating three-pointer by senior
Caitlin Ingle (Runnells, Iowa). Hittner and Rose paced the Bulldogs in scoring with seven and nine points, respectively.
Indiana State (12-12, 6-7 MVC) pulled to within 12 points with 4:33 remaining in the third quarter. However, a 9-0 Drake scoring spurt that started with back-to-back three-pointers by sophomore
Sammie Bachrodt (Wichita, Kan.) and Rose put the game out of reach for the Sycamores. Indiana State would get as close as 16 points the rest of the game.
Drake held Indiana State to just 45 points, which is the second-lowest total scored by an MVC opponent on the Bulldogs this season. Drake forced 21 turnovers and scored 26 points off the Sycamores' mistakes.
Following Friday's game, Drake plays at Loyola on Sunday. Tipoff at Gentile Arena is set for 1 p.m. If Drake wins on Sunday it will match the longest winning streak in program history. The 1996-97 Drake team has the record with a 16-game winning streak.
