LINCOLN, Neb. – The Drake University women's tennis team overcame a 3-0 deficit to beat Colorado State, 4-3 on Saturday at the Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln, Neb.
"This was a great win for us. We knew it was going to be a competitive match with Colorado State. The girls played with so much grit," said Drake head coach
Mai-Ly Tran.
The Rams came out of the gates strong, winning No. 2 double 6-1.
Summer Brills and
Joely Lomas' 6-2 win at No. 1 put the Bulldogs in good position to earn the doubles point. But CSU's Sandra Keta and Solene Crawley managed to beat
Mela Jaglarz and
Tess Herder, 6-4 to secure the doubles point for the Rams.
In singles, CSU continued its momentum into singles to win on courts five and six and take a 3-0 lead.
The Bulldogs began to battle back and got on the board by Brills' 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 1. Lomas made it a 3-2 score by earning a three-set win over Keta, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Herder tied the match up at three with her own three-set win over Riley Reeves, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4.
The fourth and decisive team point came down to court three. Sophomore
Kenya Williams edged out Celine Voss in a third set tiebreaker to clinch the Bulldog victory, 7-6, 5-7, 7-6.
"Kenya played an amazing match to clinch it for us. It's a great day to be a Bulldog," said Tran.
Drake won't return to action until March 4 when it travels to Milwaukee, Wis. to square off against Marquette.
