Women’s Basketball Advances to MVC Tournament Semifinals with 64-40 Win over Illinois State

Top-seeded Drake (26-4) advanced to the tournament semifinals for the second-straight season, where it will play either No. 4 Southern Illinois or No. 5 Wichita State on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

MOLINE, Ill. – The Drake University women's basketball team used a big third quarter to help defeat Illinois State, 64-40, on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament at the iWireless Center.
 
Top-seeded Drake (26-4) advanced to the tournament semifinals for the second-straight season, where it will play either No. 4 Southern Illinois or No. 5 Wichita State on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Bulldogs' 26 wins this season is tied for the second-most single season victories in program history with the 1980-81 team which finished 26-7.
 
Senior Lizzy Wendell (Blue Springs, Mo.) led all scorers with 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting while three other Bulldogs joined the 2017 Jackie Stiles MVC Player of the Year in double figures. Freshman Becca Hittner (Urbandale, Iowa), the MVC's Freshman of the Year, finished with 14 points while sophomores Sammie Bachrodt (Wichita, Kan.) added 12 second-half points and Nicole Miller (Walker, Iowa) chipped in 10 points off the bench.
 
Out of halftime and leading by just two points, the Bulldogs used a pair of 7-0 scoring runs, one at the beginning of the quarter and one at the end, to lead 44-26 after three quarters of play. After shooting just 26.7 percent in the first half, Drake bounced back shooting the basketball in the third period at 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the floor, outscoring ISU, 24-8. Wendell had seven points in the quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs finished at 61.5 (8-of-13) percent and ended the game at 46.4 (26-of-56) percent.
 
The Bulldogs are seeking to win their sixth MVC Tournament title and first since 2007 this weekend. Saturday's game will be the 22nd all-time trip to the semifinals for the program. Drake owns a 40-23 all-time record at the MVC Tournament. The winner of the four-day event claims the Valley's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
 
If Drake wins Saturday it advances to the MVC Championship game for the first time since 2014 and 12th time in school history. Every tournament game is broadcast online on The Valley on ESPN3
