SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Drake University men's tennis team came back to beat Arizona, 4-3, on Friday on the second day of the San Diego Spring Break Tournament at the Hogan Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
The Bulldogs won the doubles point for the second-straight day, taking an early 1-0 lead. Sophomores
Vinny Gillespie and
Tom Hands topped Trent Botha and Oliver Plaskett 6-4 at No. 2 doubles, while juniors
Calum MacGeoch and
Ben Wood clinched the doubles point with a thrilling 7-6 (10) tiebreaker victory at No. 3 doubles.
The Wildcats earned a pair of straight sets wins at No. 6 and No. 5 singles, respectively to take a 2-1 lead.
Gillespie came away with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win at No. 1 to tie the match up at 2-2.
Freshman
Barny Thorold won the first set 6-4, but Arizona's Alejandro Reguant managed to win the next two sets 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4 to put the Wildcats ahead 3-2.
Hands dropped the first set 4-6 but surged back to win the next two sets 6-3, 7-6 (0) at No. 3, to tie the match up at 3-3.
MacGeoch extended his winning streak to four matches with a hard fought 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5) victory at No. 2 to secure the 4-3 win for the Bulldogs.
Drake will square off against Harvard in the consolation championship match on Saturday at 10 a.m. PST.
