WILLIAMSBURG, Va. –
Tommi Avant fired a two-over, 72, to lead the Drake University men's golf team in the first round of the Kingsmill Intercollegiate on Sunday in Williamsburg, Va.
"We played in very tough conditions with temperatures in the 30's. We were originally scheduled to play this morning but we were delayed due to snow," Drake head coach
Matt Lewis said. "Tommi had a very solid round today. The rest of the guys had up and down days."
Avant's 72 put him tied for 12th-place through 18 holes.
Drew Ison,
Matt Lavery and
Jack Kennedy all shot a 76.
"I was glad Chase [Wicklund} was able to play since he had been sick the past two days and had been in bed for 48 hours. He is not 100 percent but battled through it," said Lewis.
Despite battling illness, freshman
Chase Wicklund recorded a 78 to round out the Bulldogs' effort.
As a team, Drake is in ninth-place out of 22 teams with a score of 300 (+20) and is just six strokes behind fifth-place Marshall.
The Bulldogs will play the second round of the Kingsmill Intercollegiate on Monday.
