DES MOINES, Iowa – Four different players scored goals for the Drake University men's soccer team in a 4-0 win over Northern Illinois on Sunday afternoon at the Cownie Soccer Complex. The shutout over the Huskies is the final exhibition for the Bulldogs who will open the regular season at Xavier on Aug. 27 at 4 p.m.
Junior
Nic Jaimes (Olathe, Kan.), freshman
Leroy Enzugusi (Marion, Iowa), sophomore
Antonio Sanchez (Iowa City, Iowa) and freshman
Alex Andersen (Iowa City, Iowa) all scored for Drake. It is the third goal of the preseason for Enzugusi and the first for each of the other three Bulldogs.
"We are delighted with the performance and result today," said head coach
Gareth Smith. "It is always great to see the work from the training field transfer over to our game day performance, which is a credit to the guys for their application. We were purposeful and intentional with our possession and very dynamic in our movement in the final third."
Jaimes' goal was the game's first as it came off a nice corner kick play. Redshirt sophomore
Alex Peterson (St. Cloud, Minn.) headed the corner by freshman
Erik Sigman (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Jaimes then headed the ball past the NIU goalkeeper, Drew Donnally, in the 23
rd minute (23:04).
It remained 1-0 until Enzugusi stole ball from the Huskies in the 54
th minute (54:38) and blasted it past new NIU goalkeeper Konrad Dziedzic. Later, Enzugusi assited Sanchez in the 70
th minute (70:46). Andersen's goal came late in the match in the 87
th minute (87:14).
As a team, Drake tallied 15 shots to 11 by NIU. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Cade McCullough (Evansville, Ind.) played the whole game and recorded five saves.
"Great to see a number of different players get on the score sheet and from all areas of the field, Smith said. "Also, delighted for young Caden as this was his first clean sheet in college soccer. We are in good form and looking forward to use this next week to prepare for a tough game on the road to Xavier."
