Volleyball Back In The Knapp Center For a Three-Game Homestand

Bulldogs hosting next-to-last home conference series of the season

The Drake University volleyball team hosts a three-match homestand this weekend, starting with the Loyola Ramblers at 7 p.m. Friday evening in the Knapp Center.

The Bulldogs then take on Valparaiso at 7 p.m. Saturday evening and wrap up the homestand by taking on Chicago State at 7 p.m. on Monday in a non-conference tilt.

Friday and Monday's contests will be broadcast on ESPN3. Saturday's match will be aired on ESPN+.

Drake (16-8, 5-5 MVC) played well against UNI in its last match, Friday, Oct. 19, at UNI, but dropped a five-set match to the MVC's top team. Cathryn Cheek led the Bulldogs with 23 kills to match a career-high, and also added eight digs.

Cheek's 23 kills ties a personal record, and she extended her streak of matches with double-digit kills to six. Paige Aspinwall tallied a team-leading 45 assists and 11 digs for yet another double-double.

Loyola (13-9, 5-5 MVC) has won its last two matches and is looking to gain an edge on the Bulldogs in the MVC standings and break the tie between the two teams. The Ramblers' Heather Kocken is currently No. 4 in the MVC for hitting percentage (.310) and Elle Van Grinsven is close behind at No. 7 (.281). Drake won the last meeting between the two teams in a 3-1 win in Chicago in late September.

Valparaiso (20-5, 7-3 MVC) is trying to get back on track after hitting a rough patch in conference play. The Crusaders won their first five MVC matches, but have since lost three of their next four games to fall out of first place in the Valley. Valparaiso also places two players in the MVC's top-ten in hitting percentage, led by Sydney Bronner (.294) at No. 5. In the first meeting between the two programs this season, Valpo swept the Bulldogs, 3-0.

Chicago State (8-17, 2-7 WAC) will give the Bulldogs a break from conference play as they begin the final stretch of the regular season. The Cougars have lost eight of their last nine games but will have a chance to turn their momentum around with matches against WAC opponents California Baptist and CSU Bakersfield before they make the trip to Des Moines.

After the three-game homestand, Drake faces a pair of Illinois opponents on the road starting with Illinois State at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2. The Bulldogs then head to Peoria, Ill. to play Bradley at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3.
