Volleyball Begins Three-Game Homestand Friday Against Bradley

The Drake University volleyball team hosts a trio of Missouri Valley Conference foes this weekend, starting with the Bradley Braves at 7 p.m. Friday evening in the Knapp Center.

The Bulldogs then take on Illinois State at 7 p.m. Saturday evening and wrap up the homestand by taking on Indiana State at 6 p.m. on Monday. Friday and Saturday's contests will be broadcast on ESPN+. Monday's match will be aired on ESPN3.

Drake (13-5, 2-2 MVC) split their pair of MVC matchups last weekend with a 3-0 loss at Valparaiso and a 3-1 win over Loyola. The Bulldogs hit just .041 against the then-MVC leading Crusaders and were unable to gain any traction against the Crusaders.

In their match against Loyola Drake bounced back by hitting .282, despite a rocky third set that Loyola took advantage of to win its lone set of the match. Five Bulldogs had nine or more kills, including Grace Schofield who had a team-leading 14 to go along with 14 digs.

Paige Aspinwall also had a double-double, with 30 assists and 11 digs. Emily Plock had an efficient game, totaling 10 kills on just 14 attacks to post a hitting percentage of .643.

Bradley (14-2, 4-0 MVC) comes to Des Moines on an eight-game winning streak including a 4-0 start to MVC play. The Braves are led by Erica Haslag whose 3.90 kills per set puts her at third in the Valley. Defensively they are led by Yavianliz Rosado, who is second in the Valley with 5.58 digs per set.

Illinois State (12-4, MVC 4-0) is currently perfect in conference play, but they will head to UNI to take on the Panthers on Friday before their match against Drake on Saturday. The Redbirds have not lost to an unranked team since an Aug. 25 loss to Georgia in Athens Ga. where they lost 3-1. Since then, they have lost to No. 23 Washington State, 3-1, No. 6 Wisconsin, 3-1, and No. 21 Marquette, 3-0. They are led by Marissa Stockman who is hitting an impressive .380 this season.

Indiana State (7-10, MVC 0-5) started the season strong, but have gone on a five-game losing streak since conference play began. They will have a chance to turn that around with matches at home against Missouri State and Southern Illinois before they hit the road for Monday's match. The Sycamores' Laura Gross leads the team with 3.06 kills per set, as well as 3.75 digs per set which is second best on the team.

After this weekend's slate of home matches, Drake hits the road next weekend when it travels to Springfield, Mo., to take on Missouri State Friday, Oct. 12, and then Carbondale, Ill. Saturday, Oct. 13 to take on the Southern Illinois Salukis.
