DES MOINES, Iowa - It was a career-setting night for three Bulldogs who lead the Drake University volleyball team (15-6, 4-3 MVC) to its 15th victory of the season over visiting Indiana State (8-12, 1-7 MVC) Monday evening at the Knapp Center.
Cathryn Cheek (Coppell, Texas) recorded her third straight double-double, racking up a career-high 23 kills and 14 digs on the night.
Callan Holmes (Lorena, Texas) also recorded a double-double with a career-high 16 kills and 12 digs.
Paige Aspinwall (Dayton, Minn.) impressed again in Drake's 5-1 rotation, gathering a career-high 53 assists in the four sets.
The Bulldogs picked up a 25-13 first set win but fell to the Sycamores in the second set, 25-14. Drake bounced back for the victory with set scores of 25-18 and 25-19 in the final two sets.
The Bulldogs registered 17 kills with a .457 hitting percentage in the first set for a 25-13 victory. Cheek and Elle Tubbs (Clinton, Iowa) lead the way with seven and five kills, respectively. Tubbs did so on just five attempts. The Bulldogs also had a 100 percent sideout percentage in that set.
The Sycamores jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the second set, but the Bulldogs chipped away to pull within two, forcing Indiana State to take a timeout hanging on to a 12-10 lead over Drake. A 6-0 Sycamore run forced the Bulldogs to take another timeout trailing, 19-12. The Bulldogs would only score two more points in the set as they fell to the Sycamores, 25-14. Drake had 12 attacking errors to only 11 kills in the set.
The Bulldogs came out swinging to take a 9-2 lead in the third set and never trailed in winning the set, 25-18. The Bulldogs bounced back from their hitting woes and registered 19 kills with a .278 hitting percentage in the third set.
In the final set, the Sycamores got out to a 9-7 lead before Coach Darrin McBroom called a timeout. With the score knotted at 12, a kill from Emily Plock (Altoona, Iowa) gave Drake its first lead as the Bulldogs pulled away for the 25-19 set victory.
Indiana State (8-12, 1-7 MVC) was led by senior Laura Gross who had 14 kills and 20 digs.
The Bulldogs begin a stretch of three-straight road games as they head to Missouri State this Friday, Oct. 12 to take on the Lady Bears at 7 p.m. and follow that with a game at SIU on Saturday evening.
