First Place In The PFL On The Line Saturday In Drake Stadium

Bulldogs welcome PFL leader San Diego to Drake Stadium for a 1 p.m. game

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University football team hosts a pivotal game against the Pioneer Football League's leader, San Diego, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3.

Saturday's contest features one of the best defenses in the nation playing host to one of the nation's top offenses. San Diego's offense is one of the best in FCS football, ranking second nationally in passing offense (343.5 yards per game), and third in passing efficiency (172.84).

Meanwhile, Drake has one of the top ranked defenses nationally, including top-10 rankings in pass efficiency defense (6th) and rushing defense (9th). The team ranks 11th nationally in total defense and 15th in scoring defense this season.

As a result, the Bulldogs lead the PFL in Defensive Players of the Week with Sean Lynch garnering the most recent honor this week after a nine-tackle performance with an interception return for a touchdown at Valparaiso.

Offensively, Drake (5-2, 4-1 MVC) wrapped up their two-game road trip with a strong showing at Valparaiso. Quarterback Grant Kraemer had another four touchdown performance, and Drew Lauer posted his second consecutive game with over 100 yards rushing.

Steven Doran had another solid game with 68 yards on five receptions, adding a touchdown to bring his season total to nine, the sixth-highest total in the nation. Zach DeLeon had an efficient game, with two receiving touchdowns on just three receptions.

San Diego (6-2, 5-0 PFL) heads to Des Moines riding a five-game winning streak. The Toreros boast a high-powered offense, which has scored 36 or more points in six of the season's eight games, including all five conference contests.

The last meeting between the two teams was a 45-15 San Diego home win. The Toreros held Drake to just 16 yards rushing, and used a 21-point fourth quarter to pull away from the Bulldogs.

San Diego leads the all-time series, 14-11, including after winning each of the last six meetings. Drake's last win against the Toreros was a 38-10 home victory in 2012.

After this week's game, Drake hosts Marist for the final home game of the 2018 regular season at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 10.
