Colorado Rallies Past Drake Men's Basketball

Buffaloes use a big run to push past Drake Tuesday evening.

2The Drake University men's basketball team suffered a 100-71 loss to Colorado in the Bulldogs' first road game of the season Tuesday, Nov. 13, evening at the CU Events Center.

The Buffaloes assembled a 27-5 run that spanned two four-minute periods that bookended halftime to pull away for the win in their season opener.

"I thought early in the game, I liked where we were at," said Drake head coach Darian DeVries. "It felt like the end of the first half and beginning of the second half got away from us. I told the guys 'this doesn't define us.' It's a night that got away from us. We need to look at the tape and see the areas we need to improve, but we'll continue to get better and this group will respond."

Colorado's victory was keyed by 25 points from Namon Wright while the Buffaloes defense limited Drake to 38.7 percent shooting while the CU offense converted at a 58.9 percent clip.

Nick Norton led Drake (1-1) in scoring with 18 points and four assists while D.J. Wilkins added 16 points, 11 of them in the first half.

Wilkins buried a pair of early three-pointers from the wings to put Drake up, 6-5, in the first four minutes of the contest. The Bulldogs made four of their first eight three-point attempts to keep pace with the Buffaloes until CU went on a quick 12-0 run in less than two minutes to take a 27-19 lead with less than eight minutes left in the opening half.

Facing their first bit of adversity of the season, the Bulldogs responded with a 13-2 spurt of their own that included three three-pointers to take a 32-30 lead with less than four minutes left in the half. However, Colorado outscored Drake, 15-2, to close the half as the flow and pace of the game ground to a halt. Wilkins scored 11 of his points in the first while Norton added nine.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, intermission did not slow the Buffaloes stampede as they opened the second half on a 12-3 run to extend their halftime advantage. The Bulldogs were held without a field goal until Noah Thomas converted on a floating layup with 15:26 remaining in the contest.

Colorado continued to add onto its lead as the Bulldog rotation started to be hamstrung by foul troubles in the second half to prevail with the 100-71 win.

"We got into some foul trouble, we had to manage it a little bit," DeVries said. "But our movement got stagnant and you can't let a team shoot 60 percent and outrebound you by 15 and expect to win."

Drake returns to Des Moines Saturday, Nov. 17, to host Texas State for a 2 p.m. tipoff. Saturday's contest will also be 'Community Day' at the Knapp Center with $1 advance general admission tickets available by using the promo code DOLLAR at DrakeTix.com/promo
