OMAHA, Neb. – The Drake University women's basketball team closes its season-long four game road trip at Creighton Wednesday, Nov. 28. Tipoff with its former Missouri Valley Conference rival is scheduled for 12 p.m. The game will be broadcast in Des Moines on 1350 ESPN Des Moines and available on the TuneIn app.
Drake (6-1) makes the short trip to play Creighton (1-3) coming off a successful Thanksgiving trip to Vancouver for the inaugural Vancouver Showcase where it went 2-1 in an eight-team field that included six 2018 NCAA Tournament teams. The Bulldogs earned wins over Rutgers and then No. 13 South Carolina with their lone loss to No. 1 Notre Dame. The trip up north helped Drake move to No. 24 in Monday's
Associated Press' Top 25 poll. This is the first ranking for the program since it closed the 2016-17 season at No. 20 in the final
AP poll and it's the earliest a Drake team has been ranked since the 2001-02 Drake squad was ranked No. 24 Dec. 10, 2001.
Drake and Creighton will play for the 67th time Wednesday afternoon. The Bulldogs hold a 39-27 advantage in the series with the Bluejays who left the MVC in 2013 for the BIG EAST. However, Creighton has won the last two meetings, including last season's four-overtime back-and-forth marathon at the Knapp Center. Drake equaled program history in the 108-100 loss as it was just the second four-overtime game in Drake history. The Bulldogs' back-and-forth marathon against their former MVC rival was the longest game in the NCAA last season. The 208 combined points were the fourth most points ever scored in an MVC game. Just six days later, Drake and Nebraska played a two-overtime contest.
One of the nation's most impressive home court winning streak ended with the loss to the Bluejays as Drake's 21-game home winning streak was snapped. The impressive streak started on Feb. 5, 2016 with a win over Wichita State, included a 13-0 mark during the 2016-17 season and wins over Milwaukee, Liberty and Iowa State that season. The streak was the third longest active streak at the time in the NCAA behind UConn (68) and Montana State (28) and the fourth longest in MVC history.
Creighton is at home for the first time since its home opener Nov. 7 against South Dakota. The Bluejays lost their last game 65-55 at UNI Nov. 20. Creighton is led in scoring by senior and Dowling Catholic graduate, Aubrey Faber, who averages 19.3 points per game.
Following Wednesday's game, Drake has a break before it hosts Clarke Dec. 4 for the program's annual Pack the Knapp for Character Game Hosted by Drake's Ray Center. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. as thousands of area elementary and middle school students will pack the Knapp Center for a fun day of basketball and educational activities.
