OKLAHOMA CITY – A season-best 14 strikeouts by pitcher
Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) helped lead the Drake University softball team to a 1-0 victory over Purdue (4-19) Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Hall of Fame Classic.
Newman allowed just one hit with two walks in the complete game. Newman's 14 strikeouts are the most by a Bulldog pitcher since Newman's career-high of 17 against Creighton in 2015.
Drake (15-9) scored its lone run in the top of the fifth after
Kelsey Wright (Olathe, Kan.) led off with a single. A ground out from
Kailee Smith (Murrieta, Calif.) moved pinch-runner
Abby Buie (Gardner, Kan.) to third base before
Sarah Maddox (Henderson, Nev.) drove in Buie with a single to left field for the only run of the game.
Maddox, Smith and Wright had the team's only hits.
The Bulldogs' victory Sunday closed out their tournament schedule with a 3-2 performance this weekend at the Hall of Fame Classic. Drake is set to open MVC play at Evansville next weekend with a three-game series, March 17-18.
