Tasha Alexander (Eddyville, Iowa) drove in the winning run with a triple in the sixth inning for the Drake University softball team in a 2-1 win over Missouri State Sunday afternoon at Buel Field
Drake (41-10, 24-1 MVC) and Missouri State (32-19, 17-8 MVC) went back-and-forth in the regular season finale for both teams. The Bulldogs are the No. 1 seed for this week's MVC Championship at Buel Field, May 10-12, while the Bears are the No. 2 seed.
Redshirt junior pitcher
Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) earned the win in relief and improved to 19-3. Newman pitched 1.2 innings and struck out four Bears with one walk. Senior
Kailee Smith (Murrieta, Calif.) started and went 5.1 innings and allowed one unearned run on five hits with one walk.
Drake struck first on Sunday in the fourth inning as Smith started the frame with her team-leading fifth home run of the season, a solo blast over the left field fence.
Missouri State evened the score at 1-1 in the fifth inning with Hannah Heinrichs' RBI single.
In the sixth inning, senior
Kelsey Wright (Olathe, Kan.) drew a one-out walk and after a strikeout by Newman, Alexander lined a ball down into the right field corner as Wright scored all the way from first base. Sophomore
Mandi Roemmich (West Des Moines, Iowa) couldn't add to the lead as she grounded out to shortstop to end the inning.
Newman, who entered in the sixth inning with runners on first and second base and two outs, but quickly struck out the next two Bears to escape the jam. In the seventh, she worked around a leadoff walk by forcing a groundout and then getting back-to-back strikeouts.
Prior to Sunday's finale, Drake honored its 2018 senior class of Alexander,
Ashlie Chambers (Ankeny, Iowa), Smith and Wright. Smith finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
Following the conclusion of the regular season, Drake opens the MVC Championship as the No. 1 seed and will play Friday at 4 p.m. at Buel Field. The Bulldogs will play the winner of the 11 a.m. contest Friday between the No. 4 seed and No. 8/No. 5 teams.
