Missouri Powers Past Drake, 3-0

Bulldogs stumble against perennial NCAA power.

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Drake University volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to perennial NCAA Tournament participant Missouri on the final day of the Mizzou Invitational Saturday, Sept. 15.

With the loss, the Bulldogs took second place in the two-day event with a 2-1 record. Drake now stands at 11-2 this season heading into its final match before the conference season Tuesday night at Kansas.

The Bulldogs' second loss of the season came by set scores of 25-22, 25-14, 25-14 to Missouri (10-2).

Drake was held to just .071 hitting in the loss while the Tigers converted at a .349 clip. Sophomore Emily Plock (Altoona, Iowa) led the Bulldogs with eight kills on 20 attempts while Elle Tubbs (Clinton, Iowa) had four kills on six attempts.

Paige Aspinwall (Dayton, Minn.) added a double-double with 16 assists and 11 digs in the loss.

Drake jumped out to a 6-1 lead to start the match and held a lead until the Tigers tied the first set at 14-14. Neither team would lead by more than two points for the remainder of the set until Missouri closed the set with a three-point advantage.

The second set was equally close early until an 8-1 Missouri run broke a 10-10 tie and propelled the Tigers to a 25-14 win. The third set was all Tigers as they built up an early 15-4 lead and did not relent in winning the final set 25-14.

The Bulldogs aim to rebound from the loss when they travel to Kansas, Sept. 18, for a 6:30 p.m. match against the Jayhawks.
