Women’s Golf Takes Second At Loyola Invitational

Bulldogs finish second out of 12 teams and Lee finishes fifth individually.

FLOSSMOOR, Ill. - Following a strong first day at the Loyola Invitational, the Drake University women's golf team maintained its position on the leaderboard Tuesday, Sept. 18, to finish second in the 12-team, 54-hole event at Flossmoor Country Club.

The Bulldogs recorded a team score of 317 Tuesday to finish the two-day event with a combined score of 312-311-317–940. The team's performance tied with Loyola, however, the Bulldogs prevailed in the tiebreaker.

"We hung in there to maintain our standing in second place and I'm proud of the ladies for that" said Drake head coach Rachael Pruett. "We will build on the momentum of this good finish to compete at the same level at Iowa, but that will take better rounds and we certainly have the ability to do that."

South Dakota won the event with a team score of 305-305-303–912 and led each of the three rounds.

Grace Dunn (Brookfield, Wis.) carded the Bulldogs' best round of the day by firing a 78 to move up two spots finish in a tie for 10th on the individual leaderboard with a three-round performance of 76-82-78–236.

Haeri Lee (Buffalo Grove, Ill.), whose strong play lifted the Bulldogs during the first two rounds, struggled slightly on the final day, finishing with an 81. However, Lee finished fifth overall with a three-day 75-75–81.

Sam Paulak (Kansas City, Mo.) posted her second-straight sub-80 score with a 79 to finish in 17th overall at 81-78-79–238.

Sigurlaug Jonsdottir (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) recorded an 80 Tuesday to finish in a tie for 18th at 80-79-80–239 and Kristen Giles (Georgetown, Ontario) added another 80 to record an 82-80-80–242 over the invitational's 54 holes.

In addition to beating Loyola, the Bulldogs also bested Missouri Valley Conference rival Valparaiso (323-322-318–963) and regional foes such as Creighton (326-316-313–955) and Omaha (322-32-321–964).

The Bulldogs return to the links Sept. 29-30 at the University of Iowa's Diane Thomason Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.
