Volleyball Upended By UNI In Three Sets

Cheek records 13 kills in loss to open the MVC season.

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake University volleyball team was clipped by visiting UNI, 3-0, in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both teams Friday, Sept. 21, night at the Knapp Center.

Drake (11-4, 0-1 MVC) was led by Cathryn Cheek's (Coppell, Texas) 13 kills on 34 attempts as the Bulldogs fell by set scores of 25-21, 25-18, 25-22.

"Tonight was another tough result as we continued to improve as a team against really tough competition this week," said Drake head coach Darrin McBroom. "We've competed in each of these matches but have not been able to come out on top and that is certainly the next step for our program to take."

Cheek's offensive assault was evenly spread across all three sets as she registered four kills in each of the first two sets and five kills in the third set.

"It was good to see Cathryn Cheek get off to a hot start tonight and lead us offensively," McBroom asked.

The loss was the Bulldogs' third-straight, with the previous two coming against perennial NCAA Tournament qualifiers Missouri and Kansas.

UNI (7-6, 1-0 MVC) had three players register double-figures in kills with Piper Thomas hitting .560 with 16 kills on 25 attempts. Karlie Taylor added 13 kills and Jaydlin Seehase had 13.

The Bulldogs nearly extended the match in the third set thanks to an early run that erased a five-point deficit. Drake held a tie late at 19-19 before UNI pulled away for the 25-22 win to take the match.
