Volleyball Earns a 3-1 Road Win at Loyola

Bulldogs hit .282 to push past Loyola in four sets

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Drake University volleyball evened its Missouri Valley Conference record with a 3-1 win at Loyola Saturday, Sept. 29, evening.

The Bulldogs pushed past Loyola by set scores of 25-22, 25-19, 14-25, 25-23. Grace Schofield (Mundelein, Ill.) led Drake (13-5, 2-2 MVC) with 14 kills on 33 attempts along with 14 digs. Gillian Gergen (Janesville, Iowa) and Natalie Fry (Allen, Texas) also had a strong night in the middle with a combined 20 kills between the pair.

Paige Aspinwall (Dayton, Minn.) engineered that offensive attack with 30 assists while adding 11 digs for another double-double. Kylee Macke (Ankeny, Iowa) added 22 digs on defense for the Bulldogs.

Drake rebounded from a subpar offensive night in Friday's loss at Valparaiso to hit .282 in defeating Loyola (11-6, 3-2 MVC).

The Ramblers had four players hit in double figures in kills with Gabi Maciagowski leading the way with 14 kills on 28 attempts.

Aspinwall helped serve up a 5-2 run to close the first set for the Bulldogs and the second set was never in doubt as the Bulldogs led from start-to-finish for the 25-19 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

However, Loyola answered by opening the third set with a 7-0 lead as Drake struggled to convert offensively. The Ramblers capitalized on Drake's brief lapse to take the third set, 25-14.

Drake recovered and hit .385 in the fourth set to push past the Ramblers, 25-23, to take the set and the match, 3-1.

Drake closed its first conference road trip with a 1-1 mark and returns home next to begin a three-game homestand against Bradley, Illinois State and Indiana State. The homestand begins Friday, Oct. 5, against Bradley at 7 p.m. in the Knapp Center.
