Illinois State Defeats Drake Volleyball in Three Sets

Bulldogs remain home to host Bradley Saturday afternoon

DES MOINES, Iowa - Emily Plock notched 16 kills for the Drake University volleyball team Friday evening. Still, it was not enough to temper a strong hitting night from Illinois State in a 3-0 loss at the Knapp Center.

Illinois State defeated the Bulldogs by set scores of 25-22, 25-19, 25-15 thanks to 14 kills on 26 attempts from Kaylee Martin and eight kills on 17 attempts by Sydney Holt.

In addition to Plock's kills, Elle Tubbs added five kills on 12 attempts and added three blocks. Setter Caitlyn Smith was also in on three blocks and posted 13 assists on offense.

Drake (7-12, 1-5 MVC) was held to .085 hitting in the match while Illinois State (10-7, 3-2 MVC) converted at a .275 clip.

The Bulldogs faced a six-point deficit late in the first set at 18-12. However, following a timeout, the Bulldogs went on a 5-0 run behind Maddy Baxter's serving to nearly tie the set. Unfortunately, they could not push past the Redbirds as ISU eventually stretched the lead back out to as many as four points in taking the set, 25-22.

Drake held an early lead in the second set, but an 11-4 Redbird run flipped the advantage and ISU closed the set on another run, this one 6-1, to take the set, 25-19, and a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Redbirds came out firing in the third set, hitting .344 and allowing just seven Drake kills to prevail, 25-15, and sweep the final set from the Bulldogs.

Drake attempts to reverse its fortunes Saturday when its homestand continues with a 5 p.m. match against Bradley in the Knapp Center.
