Wilkins Named To Preseason All-MVC Team; Defending Champions Picked Fifth

Wilkins aims to follow up his breakout freshman season in helping the Bulldogs defend their MVC title.

ST. LOUIS - Drake University sophomore guard D.J. Wilkins has been to the Missouri Valley Conference Preseason Team, the league announced Thursday, Oct. 17, along with its annual preseason poll. Drake, one of the league's two defending regular-season champions, was picked to finish fifth.

Wilkins earned a spot on the MVC preseason third team and returns for his sophomore season after earning All-Freshman honors in 2018-19. His breakout season helped the Bulldogs to the regular-season title. He started every game he appeared in as a freshman and averaged 11.1 points per game while shooting 38.9 percent from three-point range. He finished the season particularly strong with an 18-to-5 assist-to-turnover ratio in his last six games.

After rattling off 24 wins in 2018-19 during first-year head coach Darian DeVries debut season to win the MVC regular-season title, the Bulldogs were tabbed fifth in this season's preseason poll. Missouri State was the preseason favorite as voted upon by the league's coaches, media and communications personnel. Bradley, the league's defending tournament champion, was picked second, followed by UNI and Loyola.

Drake is slated to return nearly a half dozen of its regular contributors from its championship team while adding a bevy of talented newcomers added during the offseason.

The Bulldogs make their public debut on the court Oct. 24 with the team's Blue & White scrimmage at 6 p.m. at the Knapp Center. Admission is free and open to the public.
