Women’s Tennis Opens Play at MVC Individual Championship

Drake returns to the courts Saturday for the second day of the MVC Individual in Waterloo.

Four Drake University student-athletes and a doubles team advanced to the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championship Friday afternoon during the first day of competition in Waterloo, Iowa.

At No. 1 singles, Carmen Palumbo defeated UNI's Harri Proudfoot, 6-2, 6-2 to advance. Newcomer Maria Tatarnikova also moved on with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Valparaiso's Amanda Tabanera.

Sophia Haleas also moved on with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win against Bradley's Victoria Sanchez-Bronzetti. Liza Petushkova received a first-round bye into the semifinals in the No. 2 singles flight.

In doubles action, the Drake team of Joely Lomas and Carmen Palumbo moved on with an 8-3 win over their counterparts from Vanderbilt.

The Bulldogs' Friday winners will aim to continue their journey toward an MVC title during Saturday's semifinal action.
