SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Drake University women's soccer team fell to Missouri State, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon in Springfield. Anna Durnin scored the decisive goal for the Bears in the 27
th minute with a laser into the top-right corner of the net. She recorded a game-high four shots and three shots on target. Missouri State's Jordan Eickelman controlled the ball near the left edge of the 18-yard box before centering a pass to Durnin, who took a touch before unleashing the eventual game-winner.
"Missouri State is undefeated at home for a reason," said Drake head coach
Lindsey Horner. "We competed really well, did a good job of building the play, and connected with our target player the way we wanted, but lacked the cutting edge in the final third."
Junior goalkeeper
Kelsie Stone made seven saves between the posts for the Bulldogs, none better than her sprawling effort in the 58
th minute. Stone spoiled a strike by Durnin, reacting quickly and leaping to her left to deflect the shot, getting just enough on it to force the ball off the crossbar.
"
Kelsie Stone had a great game, and it had to be a special shot that was going to beat her," Horner said. "
Hannah Bormann put in a great shift and drove the team forward throughout."
The Bulldogs' offense mustered eight shots, led by
Libby Helverson with three.
Drake (3-8-1, 0-2-0 MVC) travels to Evansville next Saturday for a 3 p.m. kick.
"We need to continue to build on this performance going into the Evansville game where we need to get points on the road," Horner said.
