Missouri State Upends Drake Volleyball, 3-1

Bulldogs continue homestand Saturday at 5 p.m. against SIU

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake University volleyball team fell to the Missouri State Bears, 3-1, Friday evening at the Knapp Center in the team's first game back home after nearly two weeks out on the road.

Missouri State finished with three-straight set wins to take the match by set scores of 26-28, 25-23, 26-24, 25-22

Junior hitter Emily Plock (Altoona, Iowa) led the Bulldogs in scoring with 19 kills as she missed recording her fourth-straight 20-kill match by just one. Plock had a total of 22 points with the addition of three blocks assisted by sophomore blocker Riley Dolphin (Des Moines, Iowa), who finished with five blocks and five kills. Gillian Gergen (Janesville, Iowa) added 13 kills on 36 attempts for Drake (9-16, 3-9 MVC).

Kylee Macke (Ankeny, Iowa) topped led the defensive effort again for Drake with 20 digs and Paige Aspinwall (Maple Grove, Minn.) tacked on 10 digs and 26 assists to notch another double-double.

The Bulldogs saw confident play early on, with a comeback midway through the first set spurred by Macke's serving, sending them on a seven-point run to take the lead at 18-13. Drake used that cushion to hold off the Bears and take the set, 28-26.

Despite a strong opening, the Bulldogs struggled in the second and third sets dropping each 25-23 and 26-24. Even so, with the addition of Dolphin early in the second and continued attacks from Plock, the team saw seven blocks providing strong defensive efforts throughout both sets.

In the fourth set, the Bulldogs kept up the fight with an early lead padded by a duo of blocks by Elle Tubbs (Clinton, Iowa) and freshman outside hitter Michele Rabbitt (Canton, Ohio), each of whom saw multiple blocks in the first half of the set. The team jumped to an early 13-10 lead, starting a back-and-forth that would continue through the rest of the set before eventually falling to the Bears 25-22.

Missouri State (8-18, 5-7 MVC) was led in scoring by sophomore outside hitter Amelia Flynn, who walked away with 19 kills. The team was led in assists by sophomore setter Chloe Rear who had 30.

The game marked the first of two home games for the Bulldogs, who will take on the Southern Illinois Salukis on Saturday at 5 p.m.
