Plock Sets Drake Kills Record In Volleyball’s Season Finale

Plock finishes the season with 472 kills

DES MOINES, Iowa - Drake University junior Emily Plock made history Saturday night in the Knapp Center during Drake's 3-2 loss to Loyola to end the season. Plock finished the night with 26 kills to set the Drake single-season kills record at 472 this season.

Her 26 kills, which were two shy of a career high, moved her well past the previous record of 463 set by Angela Bys in 2007.

Plock's historic night helped Drake (9-22, 3-15 MVC) recover from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set against Loyola (21-10, 14-4 MVC). The Ramblers finished the regular season in second in the MVC standings.

The Ramblers held off Drake by set scores of 25-13, 25-22, 19-25, 17-25, 15-10.

In addition to Plock's 26 kills on 66 attempts, Gillian Gergen added eight kills and six blocks. Elle Tubbs, playing in her final match as a Bulldog, notched a career-high 10 blocks. Drake's other senior, Paige Aspinwall, had 26 of Drake's assists and finished her career ranked fourth all-time in assists at Drake.

Loyola was paced by 16 kills from Heather Kocken and Addie Barnes.

Facing a two-set deficit, Drake found itself tied with Loyola at 14-14 in the third set when Kylee Macke's serving keyed a 6-0 run to put the Bulldogs on top. Macke started the run with three-straight aces and Plock capped it with back-to-back kills. As a team, the Bulldogs registered a season-high 10 aces.

Drake took a big, 20-13, lead in the fourth set and was never challenged in winning the frame, 25-17, to force a fifth set.

However, in the decisive fifth set, Loyola rolled out to a 9-4 lead thanks to four kills from Kocken. Drake rallied on three kills from Gergen and Plock to pull within a point, but the Ramblers closed with five-straight kills from Barnes and Kocken to claim the win.
