Plock and Smith Named to MVC Scholar-Athlete Team

Pair of Bulldogs honored for their performance on the court and in the classroom

Drake University's Emily Plock and Caitlyn Smith have been named to the Missouri Valley Conference Volleyball Scholar-Athlete Team, the league announced Tuesday, Nov. 26.

Plock was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete first team following a breakout junior season while Smith earned an honorable mention selection.

A total of 33 student-athletes were nominated for the team with just 19 earning the honor. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 75-percent of the regular-season matches.

Plock, who maintains a 3.55 GPA as a health sciences major, was voted onto the team after leading Drake in kills with 472 this past season. That total shattered the school record for kills in a season at Drake and she ranked fifth in the league in kills per set with 3.72. She had 20 or more kills in a match eight times and recorded 11 kills/digs double-doubles.

Smith earned honorable mention accolades thanks to owning a perfect 4.0 GPA as an education major. As one of Drake's primary setter, she averaged nearly three assists per set with a career-high of 21 against Bradley. She also posted five assists/digs double-doubles.

The Scholar-Athlete Team selections were the first for each in their careers.
