Penn Named MVC Men’s Basketball Newcomer of the Week

Guard scored 22 points in the final non-conference game of the season.

Drake University guard Roman Penn has been named the Missouri Valley Conference men's basketball Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Monday, Dec. 23.

Penn's honor comes after he led the Drake men's basketball teams to a pair of wins on the week that included him scoring a career-high 22 points to earn a road win at Air Force.

In that win, he scored 11 of his points in the final nine minutes including the Bulldogs' final seven points of the win. He shot 7-of-9 from the field and 3-of-3 from the three-point arc to hit a career-best in three-pointers and added a season-high nine assists.

He opened the week with 16 points in the team's win over Mount Marty. On the week, he scored 38 total points while shooting 12-of-17 from the field, 3-of-4 from the arc and 11-of-12 at the free-throw line.

Penn and the Bulldogs return to action next to begin MVC play Dec. 31 at Bradley.
