Football Leads the Country with Three Academic All-Americans

Drake’s three selections to the CoSIDA Academic All-America team are the most among all NCAA Division I programs. Drake’s two first-team selections tied with the United States Naval Academy for the most first-team honorees in the nation.

AUSTIN, Texas – The Drake University football team has three student-athletes on the 2019 Academic All-America Division I Football Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), CoSIDA announced Monday morning. Jacob Bacon and Victor Jergens are first-team all-Americans while Isaiah Kent-Schneider is a second-team choice.
 
Drake's three selections to the CoSIDA Academic All-America team are the most among all NCAA Division I programs. Drake's two first-team selections tied with the United States Naval Academy for the most first-team honorees in the nation.
 
Drake football has now earned six total CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in the past three seasons.
 
Bacon, a senior offensive lineman from Hastings, Minn., is a first-team Academic all-American for the second straight year. He is the first Bulldog to earn back-to-back Academic all-America first-team honors.
 
Last week, Bacon was named the Pioneer Football League Scholar-Athlete of the Year becoming just the second Bulldog to win the prestigious conference award. Bacon started 10-of-11 games this season. He helped block for Drake's backs, led by fifth-year senior Drew Lauer, who rushed for 1,608 yards and scored a team-high 17 touchdowns and protect freshman quarterback Ian Corwin. He earned 2019 All-PFL honorable mention honors.
 
Bacon graduated with his bachelor's degrees in actuarial science and finance with a 3.93 grade point average. He is enrolled in Drake's Masters of Business Administration program concentrating in business analytics and holds a 4.00 grade point average.
 
Jergens is a senior defensive lineman from Webster City, Iowa, who started all 11 games. He recorded 19 tackles, including a team-leading three sacks and led the team with two forced fumbles. Jergens holds a 3.98 GPA in finance and will graduate with his bachelor's degree Saturday. He earned 2019 All-PFL honorable mention honors.
 
Kent-Schneider is a fifth-year senior from Victoria, Minn., who started 10 games on the offensive line with Bacon. He graduated with degrees in environmental science and secondary education. Kent-Schneider is enrolled in the STEM education master's program with a 3.98 GPA. He earned 2019 all-PFL honorable mention honors.
 
Bacon, Jergens and Kent-Schneider all were named to the Academic All-PFL First Team last week.
 
The 2019 Academic All-America® Division I Football Team selected by CoSIDA features 21 members with a 4.0 GPA and 36 members with at least a 3.90 GPA as either undergraduate or graduate student-athletes. The 25 members on the first team have an average GPA of 3.95.
